What's the difference?

A cruel storm had raged along the coast with huge waves
throwing thousands of starfish onto the beach.  A young boy was picking them up and casting them, one by one, back into the sea.

A man walking with his dog stopped and watched the young lad for a while then called to him.

"I don't know why you're bothering,  you won't make any difference.  There are too many of them and only you to help."

The boy stopped for a moment, looked around at the thousands of starfish surrounding him on the beach and realised that this was just one of many beaches along the coast with the same problem.

With a heavy heart he picked up a starfish, looked at the man then back at the starfish in his hand.  As he threw the starfish back out to sea he called out:

"I made a difference to that one!'
